Founded in August, 2005, the Institute has developed rapidly under the leadership of
Executive Director Cheng Zhaoxiang, who is also Dean of School of Foreign
Languages at PKU, and Artistic Director, Joseph Graves.

The Institute has a three-fold mission:
1.        Developing Theatre Departments in Mainland universities where none presently
exist.
2.        Producing theatre in Beijing and the surrounding areas mixing Eastern and
Western theatre artists and technicians;
3.        Promoting, financing and encouraging artistic and cultural exchange between
the Chinese theatre communities and those from other countries;

In the past four years, the Institute has become the harbor for thousands of students
and theatre fans to gather together and experience the charm of English-speaking
theatre through auditioning, acting, directing, playwriting or simply supporting the
Institute by coming to every performance. Among them, over ten PKU graduates have
chosen theatre as their career: Xiaoqing Hu is working in professional theatres in
America while promoting Chinese theatre and culture locally; Ying Lin is pursing her
M.F.A. in Acting at University of South Carolina in US; and many others have based
themselves in Beijing to engage in various theatre works.

Over thirty productions have been fully mounted in the past six year involving more than
20 professional theatre artists from Britain and US. They shared with participating
students their unique vision and experience in theatre and have also become our
resources of artistic exchange and educational opportunities for students.

The Institute solely depends on donations from individuals and organizations to
sustain all its theatrical and educational activities. School of Foreign Languages and
the English Department of PKU have been the strongest support to the Institute in the
past few years. They not only provide the Institute with rehearsal space for free, but
support it financially in its most difficult times. Last year, Professor Liu Yiqing of the
English Department gave the Institute 50,000 yuan out of great respect and admiration
for Mr. Joseph Graves’ relentless efforts in promoting creative education through
theatre in the past six years. Great School funded two productions in 2004 and 2005.
PKU Greek Institute funded one Greek play in 2007.

In the next five years, the goal of the Institute is to establish a theatre department
attached to Peking University to offer B.A. and M.F.A. degrees in acting, directing,
design and stage management, to build a small theatre solely for professional and
educational performances, and to tour shows to high schools in Beijing as addition to
our education outreach program.

Every dollar you donate to the Institute will be appreciated greatly. We need your
support to stay strong and brave on this long rewarding journey. Please contact

the Institute, to acquire more information on the donation procedure.

Thank you for your support.
